Local Producers

The village co-operative since 1965, pressing olives from more than 600 member growers around the Serra de Portel. Its S. Pedro extra-virgin oil is mostly Galega, the Alentejo's classic variety.

Distils aguardente de medronho — the arbutus-berry spirit — on site, plus medronho liqueur and gin. Taste at the counter and buy year-round.

Since 2021 the estate hand-picks wild medronho berries on its land and distils a limited-edition 48% aguardente.

Alentejano black pigs graze on acorns in the cork- and holm-oak montado around Portel, and several farms raise them locally. Exact farm locations aren't published — cured hams and sausages turn up at the monthly market and in local shops. Know a producer? Tell us and we'll list them.

Flocks of sheep graze under the cork and holm oaks all around Portel. Alentejo lamb is a spring favourite on local menus, and farmers show their animals at the Feira do Montado each autumn.

Four generations of beekeepers, run today by Pedro Malhadas. Award-winning rosemary (rosmaninho) honey, pollen and more — national honey contest winners in 2023. Honey sold from their honey house in Amieira.

José Manuel Advinha's family produces large amounts of Serra de Portel honey — gold medal for rosemary honey at the national contest in 2021. Buy it at their shop, Casa Advinha, which also sells animal feed and garden supplies.
