How to get to and from Portel by bus, car or plane.
Two companies serve Portel. Rede Expressos coaches run every day, weekends included, and take about 40 minutes to Évora — book online. The local Rodoviária do Alentejo line 8052 (Évora – Portel – Viana do Alentejo) runs Monday to Friday only via S. Manços and Monte Trigo, taking about 50 minutes; pay on board. No local buses on weekends, public holidays, Carnival Tuesday or Easter Monday. Timetable valid from 18 December 2024. For Lisbon, change in Évora: coaches to Sete Rios take about 1h30.

Wednesdays and Fridays differ slightly — see the tables above. No buses on public holidays.
Every route ends with the same last hop: Évora to Portel on local bus line 8052. It is slow but doable by public transport from anywhere in Portugal.

Most buses stop in Beja (from Faro) or Évora (from Lisbon). Rows marked ★ go all the way to Portel. From Évora, take line 8052 to Portel on weekdays (timetable below); from Beja, a taxi is often easiest.

Lisbon airport is the nearest big airport. Take the metro to Sete Rios, then a Rede Expressos coach to Évora and on to Portel.
Faro airport suits the Algarve route, by car only in practice.
Trains run from Lisbon to Évora (CP, about 1h30). From Évora, continue by bus or taxi.
Private flights: the closest landing strip is Évora Municipal Aerodrome (LPEV), about 40 km / 35 min by car, for small planes and light jets. For larger private jets, Beja Airport (LPBJ / BYJ) has a 3,450 m runway and handles business aviation, about 55 km / 45 min away. Arrange landing permission and ground handling in advance with the airfield.
There's no car rental in Portel itself. The nearest offices are in Évora (≈35 min) and Beja (≈45 min) — handy if you arrive by bus. Ratings from Google Maps.
